There is also music, reflecting levels of harmony, which the brain recognizes as good or very good. Melody, beat and harmony are intercepted by the brain through the sense of hearing and bring us pleasure.

Chapter 14 – Family

The term family includes many circles: The nucleus family, siblings, parents, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers and more. Each circle is significant and can be a subject for sociological and psychological research.

But the most important are the “vertical” relations of parents – children, and the “horizontal” ones, between the partners. There are also parents who are children, for my mum I was a kid, even after I passed fifty.

A separate chapter is devoted to him-her relations later in the book. So, let’s concentrate here on children-parents-children relations.

Human beings are unique in nature as children stay dependent on their parents at home for a long time.

Apes also stay together beyond early childhood, but as a herd, a community, rather than as a parents-children nucleus.

Young elephants are left on their own around the age of 12, but most of the other animals don’t stay with their parents for long.

The human baby needs long training, maybe because the human brain differs from that of other mammals in the development of its cortex and neocortex in particular.

The neocortex is the largest part of the cerebral cortex in the human brain and is involved in the higher functions, such as sensory perception, decision making, communication, conscious thought and language.
